The D'Addario EXL110-3D is a three-pack of EXL110 XL Nickel Wound electric guitar strings in the 10-46 regular light gauge. Each set consists of six strings — three plain steel and three nickel-plated steel wound — built on D'Addario's proprietary hexagonal high-carbon steel core. The hex core locks the wrap wire in position during winding, ensuring dimensional consistency along the full length of each wound string and delivering the accurate intonation and consistent feel the XL range has been known for across five decades of production. All strings are uncoated, produced at D'Addario's New York manufacturing facility using digitally controlled precision winding equipment capable of producing up to 800,000 strings per day to the same exacting specifications, set after set.
The 10-46 gauge uses plain steel for the top three strings (E, B, G) and nickel-plated steel wound wire for the bottom three (D, A, low E). The plain G string — the standard configuration for this gauge — provides the bright, clear response that players in rock, blues, pop, country, and virtually every other electric guitar genre rely on. The wound strings deliver strong fundamental resonance, clear note definition, and a smooth playing surface comfortable under the fingers and considerate of fret wear over time.
Hex Core And Nickel-Plated Steel Construction
D'Addario pioneered the precision-drawn hexagonal core that underpins the XL range. The six-sided geometry of the core grips the wrap wire at each facet during winding, preventing rotation and ensuring the winding pitch is uniform across the full string length. This directly affects intonation consistency: a string wound to a precise, locked pitch will intonate more accurately at every fret than one where the wrap wire has any freedom to shift. The nickel-plated steel wrap wire sits tonally between pure nickel and stainless steel — brighter and more present than pure nickel, with slightly less edge than stainless, making it a versatile choice for any pickup type and playing style.
Recyclable VCI Packaging And Players Circle
Each set is packed in D'Addario's recyclable VCI (Vapour Corrosion Inhibitor) bag, which protects the strings from oxidation during storage without the need for additional chemical treatments. Each bag also contains a Players Circle code that can be registered for reward points on the D'Addario website.
