Reverb So Large It Doesn't Sound Like Reverb Anymore — Eventide Blackhole, With Infinite Mode, Freeze, And Gravity Control
The Eventide Blackhole is an otherworldly reverb stompbox based on one of Eventide's most celebrated algorithms, originally developed for the DSP4000 rack processor. Five onboard presets — Blackhole, Dark Matter, Nebula, Singularity, and Pulsar — cover a range of spatial characters from vast ambient reverbs to resonant, pulsing delays, all sharing the Blackhole algorithm's fundamental character of extreme size and unusual decay behaviour. Up to 127 presets are accessible via MIDI, and the Eventide Device Manager (EDM) software provides full preset editing, creation, and management on Mac or PC via USB.
The Size control ranges from a cartoonishly compressed small room all the way to a limitless void with no perceivable boundaries. The Feedback control pushes the reverb tail through and beyond the event horizon into continuous self-sustaining operation. Infinite mode layers new material on top of a suspended reverb indefinitely. Freeze mode holds the tail completely in stasis, allowing the player to perform over it. The Gravity control is the Blackhole's most distinctive feature: at normal settings it shapes the natural decay curve; at extreme settings it inverts the tail, creating reverse-style swells and suck-back effects that bring the dry signal back into the reverb rather than the reverse. A Lo, Hi, and Q (resonance) EQ section allows the spectral character of the reverb tail to be shaped, and all EQ parameters can be mapped to an expression pedal for dynamic movement during performance.
Modulation And Bypass Options
Unlike pedals that apply modulation as a separate layer over the reverb, the Blackhole's modulation is built into the reverb structure itself, smoothing out extreme settings and adding tonal movement that is integral rather than cosmetic. Multiple bypass options — Buffered, Relay, DSP+FX, and Kill Dry — accommodate different rig requirements. A rear-panel Guitar/Line Level switch optimises the internal gain structure for instrument-level or line-level sources.
