A Step Above The Basics, Without The High-End Price Tag – Stagg SDM60 Professional Cardioid Dynamic Microphone
The Stagg SDM60 is a professional cardioid dynamic microphone designed for vocal and instrumental use in live performance environments. Built around the DC164 moving coil cartridge, it delivers a balanced and natural sound character across a frequency response of 60 Hz to 14 kHz, handling the full vocal range and a wide variety of acoustic instruments with consistent, musical results. The cardioid polar pattern keeps pickup focused on the sound source directly in front of the capsule, reducing sensitivity to off-axis noise and feedback from stage monitors — particularly useful in busy live environments where keeping the mix clean is a priority.
DC164 Cartridge And Audio Performance
The SDM60 uses Stagg's DC164 moving coil cartridge, a step up from the DC98 capsule found in the entry-level SDMP15. The DC164 delivers a warm, full-bodied vocal sound with a frequency response tailored for live use — the 60 Hz to 14 kHz range captures the full depth and presence of the human voice whilst rolling off the extreme high frequencies that can contribute to harshness and sibilance in a live PA environment. The result is a microphone that sits naturally in a live mix and translates vocals clearly to an audience without requiring excessive EQ correction at the desk.
Zinc Alloy Body Construction
The SDM60's zinc alloy body sets it apart from the plastic-bodied microphones that dominate the budget end of the market. Zinc alloy is a cast metal construction that offers considerably greater impact resistance, structural integrity, and longevity than moulded plastic — qualities that matter significantly for a microphone that will be handled, dropped, packed into bags, and used regularly across many years of gigging or teaching. The body is finished in dark slate grey with a grey windscreen and a blue trim, giving it a professional appearance that complements the step up in build quality.
Lockable On/Off Switch
The integrated lockable on/off switch is a practical and often overlooked feature. Unlike a standard toggle switch, which can be accidentally knocked into the wrong position during a performance, the lockable design requires a deliberate action to change state — preventing the frustration of an unexpected mute or live signal mid-show. For presenters, public speakers, and performers who need reliable control over their microphone signal without reaching for the mixer, this is a genuinely useful inclusion that adds a degree of professional confidence to the performance setup.
Balanced XLR Output And Included Cable
The SDM60 outputs via a standard 3-pin balanced XLR connector, which provides hum-free signal transmission and is compatible with the full range of professional mixing desks, PA systems, and audio interfaces. A 5-metre XLR-to-XLR cable is included in the box — a notably longer cable than is typically supplied with microphones at this level — giving performers sufficient reach to move freely on stage or connect to equipment positioned several metres away without needing to purchase an additional cable separately.
