An Accessible, Ready-To-Use Dynamic Mic For Vocalists And Performers – Stagg SDMP15 Cardioid Dynamic Microphone
The Stagg SDMP15 is a cardioid dynamic microphone designed for vocal and instrumental use in live performance environments. Built around a DC98 moving coil cartridge, it operates on the same fundamental technology used in professional dynamic microphones worldwide — no batteries or phantom power required — making it a simple and dependable option for anyone getting started with live sound. Its cardioid polar pattern captures sound from directly in front of the capsule whilst naturally attenuating off-axis noise from the sides and rear, providing a focused pickup that works well in noisy stage environments and reduces feedback when used with PA systems.
The frequency response of 50 Hz to 15 kHz covers the full range of the human voice and most acoustic instruments, making it suitable for lead and backing vocals, acoustic guitar, brass instruments, and general stage miking. The microphone features a built-in on/off switch for easy muting, connects via a standard XLR output, and ships with a 3.5-metre XLR to 1/4" jack cable included — meaning it can be connected directly to a mixer, PA amplifier, or audio interface without any additional accessories. Finished in charcoal grey with a black windscreen, it is suited to schools, community venues, rehearsal spaces, small stages, houses of worship, and any situation where a practical, budget-friendly microphone is required.
Cardioid Polar Pattern And Live Performance Use
The SDMP15's cardioid polar pattern is the most widely used pickup pattern in live sound for good reason. By focusing sensitivity on the area directly in front of the microphone and reducing pickup from the sides and rear, a cardioid pattern helps prevent unwanted room noise and monitor bleed from entering the signal path. This makes it significantly easier to achieve a clean, controlled mix on stage, particularly in smaller or acoustically untreated spaces. For vocalists performing with a PA system and floor monitors, the cardioid pattern also provides a natural degree of protection against feedback, especially when the microphone is used with correct technique and positioned at an appropriate distance from the speaker.
Dynamic Capsule And Audio Characteristics
As a moving coil dynamic microphone, the SDMP15 generates its signal passively — a diaphragm attached to a coil moves within a magnetic field in response to sound pressure, producing an electrical signal without the need for any external power source. This makes dynamic microphones inherently robust and well-suited to high sound pressure level environments such as live stages. The DC98 cartridge used in the SDMP15 produces a warm, natural sound character across its 50 Hz to 15 kHz frequency range, handling vocals, speech, and a variety of acoustic instruments with consistent results.
Connectivity And Included Cable
The SDMP15 outputs via a standard 3-pin XLR connector, which is compatible with mixing desks, PA systems, audio interfaces, and stage boxes. A 3.5-metre XLR to 1/4" jack cable is included in the box, allowing the microphone to be connected directly to equipment with a standard 1/4" jack input — useful for smaller amplifiers, portable PA systems, and audio interfaces that may not have an XLR input. The built-in on/off switch provides a convenient way to mute the microphone instantly, without needing to reach for a channel mute on the mixer.
