Capture Any Note Or Chord And Hold It Forever — Electro-Harmonix Freeze Sound Retainer
The Electro-Harmonix Freeze Sound Retainer captures a single frozen moment of playing and sustains it indefinitely at the press of a momentary footswitch, releasing back to normal playing the moment the footswitch is lifted. Three selectable modes control how that capture behaves. In Fast mode, sustain begins the instant the footswitch is pressed and holds for as long as it's held down. In Slow mode, the captured signal fades in gradually before sustaining, then fades back to silence gradually on release, with the fade duration selectable across three preset lengths. In Latch mode, the captured sound continues sustaining even after the footswitch is released, allowing further sounds to be captured on top — useful for building sustained chord progressions — with a double-tap on the footswitch used to kill the effect.
A single Effect Level knob sets the volume of the sustained signal, which sits alongside the unaffected dry signal at its original volume, allowing the frozen sound to be blended in at any level from a subtle backing texture through to a fully dominant drone. Because the Freeze's underlying circuitry requires it, the pedal uses high-quality buffered bypass rather than the true bypass found on most other EHX pedals — a deliberate design choice necessary for the sound-capture technology to function reliably.
