Tascam DR-40XP Portable 4-Track Digital Audio Recorder With 32-Bit Float Recording And USB-C Interface
The Tascam DR-40XP is a compact four-track portable audio recorder and 2-in/2-out USB-C audio interface, combining built-in stereo condenser microphones with two XLR/TRS combo inputs, Tascam's HDDA preamps, and 32-bit float recording at sampling rates up to 96 kHz. The built-in microphones are adjustable between A-B and X-Y stereo configurations, supporting everything from wide-field ambient recording to tightly focused interview and vocal capture. The XLR/TRS inputs support 48V or 24V phantom power for external condenser microphones, and both internal and external inputs can run simultaneously for a full four-track recording session. Recording to microSDXC cards up to 512 GB, the DR-40XP supports WAV/BWF at 32-bit float, 24-bit, and 16-bit resolutions, as well as MP3. A built-in chromatic tuner, reverb effects, overdub recording, and a slate tone for video sync round out a feature set suited to musicians, videographers, podcasters, journalists, field recordists, and live sound engineers.
Take a look at the Tascam DR-40XP in more detail..
32-Bit Float Recording
32-bit float recording is the most consequential upgrade in the DR-40XP over its predecessor. In standard recording, a signal that peaks above the set level clips and the audio is permanently distorted. With 32-bit float, the extended dynamic headroom means the recorder captures the full signal regardless of gain setting — levels can be corrected in post-production without any quality loss, even if the original take was heavily over or undercooked. For run-and-gun situations, live performances, and any recording where level-setting time is limited, this removes a significant risk. Tascam's free Audio File Manager software allows 32-bit float files to be adjusted after the fact with full fidelity.
HDDA Microphone Preamps
The DR-40XP uses Tascam's HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) preamps on the XLR/TRS inputs, delivering an Equivalent Input Noise (EIN) of –126 dBu — a figure that puts it firmly in the professional territory for a handheld recorder. Compared to the unspecified standard preamps of the DR-40X, this represents a meaningful improvement in the clarity and noise floor of externally recorded sources, particularly when using low-output dynamic microphones or recording in quiet environments where preamp noise is audible.
Adjustable Stereo Microphones And Four-Track Recording
The built-in RF-resistant unidirectional condenser microphones adjust between A-B mode for a wider stereo image with more natural ambience, and X-Y mode for tighter, more phase-coherent stereo suited to interviews, close-miking, and controlled environments. Both modes handle up to 125 dB SPL without distortion, making them usable across a very wide range of sources. The two built-in microphones and the two XLR/TRS external inputs can run simultaneously, giving four independent tracks that can be mixed down internally or exported for processing in a DAW.
USB-C Interface, Battery Life, And Practical Features
The USB-C port serves both for file transfer and as a 2-in/2-out audio interface, compatible with Windows, Mac, and iOS devices, operating at up to 24-bit/48 kHz in interface mode. Battery life reaches up to 30 hours on lithium AA cells, covering even long field recording days or multi-set live event documentation without needing a power source. Additional practical features include a 2-second pre-recording buffer, auto-record triggered by input level, instant recording activation without entering record pause mode, switchable low-cut filters at 40/80/120/220 Hz, built-in reverb, a chromatic tuner, slate tone output for video sync, and a tripod/microphone stand thread on the base.
